As a concrete example, the Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF – traded in CHF on the Swiss stock exchange SIX – will accompany us through this article. It tracks the FTSE All-World Index and covers around 4,000 companies from industrialized and emerging markets worldwide. It is available in two versions: accumulating (ticker: VWRA, income is reinvested) and distributing (ticker: VWRL, income is paid out). It is the one-ETF solution that we recommended in lesson 7 as the easiest way to get started. You can find a systematic ETF selection – with a comparison of the best alternatives – in our test report Best ETFs Switzerland and globally.

Back to the custody account: Online brokers have a clear advantage over traditional banks for cost reasons. We explain what you should look out for when making your choice in our article Best Broker Switzerland. Below we explain the three decisive criteria: Costs, services and market position.

The costs

Regardless of the provider, you should be aware of these three cost blocks when buying ETFs:

Custody fees: Recurring fee for the safekeeping of your securities – regardless of whether you trade. While traditional banks still charge these fees, they are largely a thing of the past for online brokers. If you do: maximum 0.1% per year, ideally capped.

Brokerage fees: Transaction fee for every purchase or sale. Rule of thumb: less than 1% of the transaction amount.

Other costs: You should also keep an eye on the costs that are often forgotten: stamp duty, stock exchange fees and any currency exchange fees – because they can certainly add up.

The services

If you want to invest in a self-determined way, check your (future) broker for the following four services:

ETF offering: Every broker now trades the large standard ETFs. There are differences in niche products and the choice of stock exchanges. A huge range of investments is useless if you don’t need them.

Handling: The platform must be intuitive and easy to understand – anything else is a pain in the neck.

Functionality: Savings plans for automatic investing, portfolio evaluations, performance tracking – the list goes on and on. Ask yourself what you really need.

Support: He has to be available when things get tough. And in a language that you understand.

Investment advice or actively managed solutions? Expensive and no longer necessary, now that you are well informed.

The market position

Choose an established broker, not a flash in the pan with bait-and-switch offers. Although ETFs are considered special assets in Switzerland and are legally protected in the event of a bankruptcy, unwinding them can be tedious and costly. Anyone investing for the long term anyway wants to avoid such hassle.

Buy ETF

Opened an account, transferred funds, and familiarized yourself with the platform? Then it’s time to get down to business. Since ETFs are traded on the stock exchange just like stocks, you should place your orders during normal trading hours. On the Swiss stock exchange SIX, this is possible on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Which trading platform should I choose?

Many ETFs tradable in Switzerland are available on several stock exchanges – for example on the Swiss SIX, the German XETRA and the London Stock Exchange (LSE). Three criteria help with the choice:

Trading currency: SIX offers many ETFs in CHF – this saves currency exchange fees. XETRA trades in EUR, LSE in USD or GBP. For smaller amounts, the advantage of a lower spread abroad can be eaten up by exchange fees.

Liquidity: The higher the trading volume, the narrower the spread. For standard ETFs like the VWRA, the spread on SIX is typically around 0.05%, and on XETRA and the LSE it’s even lower. For an investment of CHF 10,000, this amounts to a difference of just a few francs at most—far less than any potential currency conversion fees when buying in a foreign currency. In practice, therefore, once you reach a certain trading volume, even greater liquidity offers you little additional benefit. You can find current values in the SIX ETF Explorer or directly in your broker’s trading interface.

Time of day: Avoid the first and last 30 minutes of trading—spreads tend to be wider during those times. The best time to buy during the day is between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Swiss time. For ETFs with a high proportion of U.S. stocks—such as the VWRA—the time window starting at 3:30 p.m. is particularly worthwhile, as this is when the U.S. stock exchange NYSE opens and spreads narrow further.

Buying ETFs: What belongs in the purchase mask

This determines the trading center – leaving five details for the actual order.

Ticker: Four letters to uniquely identify your ETF – in our example “VWRA”. Can be found at the ETF provider or directly at the broker. Alternatively, ISIN or WKN also work. Multiple hits usually involve the same ETF on different exchanges – choose your preferred trading venue.

Bid-ask spread: Difference between the buying and selling price. A narrow spread means high liquidity – with standard ETFs such as the VWRA, it is usually negligible. The net asset value (NAV) calculated daily can serve as a guide for a fair valuation, although this only reflects the previous day’s close.

Price limit: Your maximum price per share – it protects you from unpleasant surprises if the price jumps between placing the order and execution. Important: A slightly higher limit does not mean that you will pay this price – the order will be executed at the actual market price, which is often cheaper. Set the limit slightly above the current ask price so that it goes through.

Number of shares: How many do you want to buy? Divide the investment amount by the ask price – done.

Validity: We recommend the current trading day. This gives you control over the price and time.

Useful practical tips for buying ETFs

Three stumbling blocks that often give beginners a headache – and are quickly defused:

Real-time or delayed? Many brokers show prices with a 15-minute delay as standard – real-time market data costs license fees. For limit orders, this means: set your limits a little more generously, as the real market price may have already moved. If you trade regularly or with large amounts, you should consider a real-time subscription.

Partial designs are normal. With larger orders, your order may be executed in several tranches at slightly different prices – this is a sign of good market mechanics, not a mistake. Nevertheless, most brokers only charge the brokerage fee once, provided that all partial executions take place on the same trading day. If in doubt: check the general terms and conditions.

Don’t be afraid of empty order books. Even if an ETF is hardly being traded at the moment, you will almost always find a counterparty. So-called market makers set binding buy and sell prices; in the background, new shares can also be created or redeemed for ETFs on an ongoing basis.

Buying ETFs: what it looks like in practice

To illustrate this, we will show you excerpts from the purchase process using the online broker Saxo as an example.
