You pay it for the safekeeping and management of your ETFs and other securities. The prices often depend on the value of your portfolio, with certain providers setting lower and upper limits. For example, the leading online broker Swissquote charges 0.1% per year for a custody account, with a minimum of CHF 60 and a maximum of CHF 200. PostFinance, on the other hand, charges an annual flat fee of CHF 72 regardless of the size of the custody account.

Other trading platforms such as those of Interactive Brokers (see our detailed review) and DEGIRO (see our partner offer below) as well as neon banks such as Yuh and neon do not charge any custody fees at all.

With regard to custody account fees, you should therefore ask yourself the following question: How large is my custody account and what size will it be in the medium term? Rule of thumb: If custody account fees are charged, then they should be capped and not exceed 0.1% of the value of the custody account.

Brokerage fees (commissions)

This is the transaction-related commission in favor of the broker that is incurred for every purchase or sale of securities such as ETFs. With most providers, brokerage fees increase with increasing transaction volumes. Some providers such as Cash (CHF 29) or Migros Bank (CHF 40) offer flat fees. You should therefore ask yourself the following questions about brokerage fees: How often do I trade? How high is my usual transaction amount? Rule of thumb: The brokerage fees should be less than 1% of the transaction amount.

– Partner Offer –

– – – – –

Further costs

Transactions in Switzerland are subject to federal stamp duty. This so-called stamp duty amounts to 0.075% of the transaction value for domestic securities and 0.15% for foreign securities. The stock exchanges also charge stock exchange fees to banks and brokers. Most providers pass on turnover tax and stock exchange fees to their investment clients. In general, it can be said that these two fees are usually negligible. Anyone who regularly trades securities in foreign currencies should not neglect the costs for the associated foreign exchange transactions. At the Swiss stock exchange SIX, this is the case from 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

The following steps and clarifications are necessary for the purchase:

Recognizing securities: The easiest way is to use the so-called ticker. This usually consists of four letters and can be found on the ETF information page justetf.ch or directly from the provider. In our example, the ticker is “SWDA”. Alternatively, you can also use the securities identification number (WKN) or the international securities identification number (ISIN).

Net asset value (NAV): The official NAV or net asset value of an ETF is calculated once a day on the basis of the last closing prices of the underlying securities. An ETF trades at a premium if its price is above its NAV. If its price is below the NAV, it is trading at a discount. For most ETFs, the premiums and discounts are usually very low, but can be high in volatile times. You can also find out the NAV online from the ETF provider. The NAV is primarily intended to provide you with a guide to the pricing or “true” value of the ETF. As at 13.12.2018, the NAV for our sample ETF was USD 51.79.

Bid-ask spread: This is the difference (spread) between the buying and selling price. In our example, the bid and ask prices are 51.19 resp. 51.23 USD very close to each other. This is positive and indicates a high level of liquidity.

Price limit: The price limit is the maximum price you are prepared to pay for an ETF share. When setting this limit, you should consider the NAV and the ask price (see above). For our sample ETF, we set the limit at USD 51.30.

Number of ETF units: We decide to buy 100 units.

Finally, you define the validity of your order. Here we prefer the current trading day because we want to complete our transaction promptly.

To better illustrate this, you will find below some excerpts from the Swiss provider PostFinance, whose e-trading platform is incidentally based on that of Swissquote.
