We are convinced that the best way to implement such a strategy is with ETFs. Therefore, in this DEGIRO Experience Switzerland report, we assess the provider primarily from the perspective of a passive ETF investor.

A brief portrait

DEGIRO opened its doors to private investors in the Netherlands in 2013. This was followed by its market entry in Switzerland in 2016. To date, DEGIRO has expanded to 15 European countries and already has over 3 million customers, according to its own figures. As a result, DEGIRO has become the market-leading broker in Europe at breathtaking speed.

DEGIRO sees itself as the first wholesale broker for private investors. As a platform for everyone, whether investor or trader, with the following mission: “DEGIRO wants to provide affordable and customized financial services to every investor worldwide .”

The broker boasts over 100 international broker awards on its homepage.

DEGIRO B.V. merged with flatexDEGIRO Bank AG at the beginning of 2021, creating the largest execution-only online broker in Europe with its own banking license.

How secure is the broker?

DEGIRO is a regulated broker whose market conduct is monitored by the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). However, DEGIRO is not regulated by FINMA in Switzerland.

With regard to the risks associated with DEGIRO, we believe that the two potential risks “bank account” and “securities lending” must be understood:

Bank account” risk

Before the merger with Flatex in 2021, DEGIRO did not have a banking license, which is why it invested its customers’ cash in money market funds. The risk at the time was that the value of these funds could change, as with any other investment.

Since the merger with Flatex, a bank account (cash account) is automatically opened for each investor in his or her name at flatexDEGIRO Bank AG. The uninvested money is then held in a separate bank account with a personal IBAN. This money is protected up to €100,000 by the Compensation Scheme of German Banks. This protection is guaranteed by law.

In the event of bankruptcy of flatexDEGIRO Bank AG, we therefore only see a significant risk for cash deposits for amounts exceeding the threshold of €100,000.

Securities lending risk – not applicable without consent

DEGIRO has abolished automatic securities lending – a welcome step from the customer’s point of view, which also eliminates the previously unavoidable risk.

DEGIRO now only lends securities with your express consent and after a short suitability test. If you activate this optional function, you will receive half of the income from securities lending.

A risk therefore only arises if you activate securities lending – and even then only in a rare scenario: if both the borrower and DEGIRO become insolvent at the same time and the collateral deposited no longer fully covers the value of the securities lent, for example because they have fallen or the securities lent have risen in value.

Any loss would thus be limited to the difference between the securities lent and the collateral provided by the borrower.

The depot selection

Although the “Custody” custody account variant is no longer offered to new customers, we will briefly summarize here how “Basic” is positioned compared to the “Custody” option that was previously also offered:

A more comprehensive range of services: investments in high-risk investment vehicles such as leverage products and warrants are possible.

lower prices: However, it is important to put this into perspective. We only noticed one cost item that could be advantageous for the passive ETF investor we want to address in this report: No fees are charged for dividend processing. In the case of “Custody”, these fees per dividend payment amounted to €1 plus 3% of the dividend (maximum 10%). This means that a CHF 100 dividend would incur a fee of €4, and a CHF 10 dividend would incur a fee of €1, meaning that the maximum cost ceiling of 10% would apply.

more flexibility: it is possible to switch to profiles that appeal to the (very) risk-averse investor type. These profiles are “Active”, “Trader” or “Day Trader”. They can be used to take out securities loans, for example, i.e. investing on credit and with leverage – always on both sides, of course. You can find out more about this topic in our article Lombard loans when buying ETFs: Boosting your return on equity or playing with fire?

App and platform

As befits a modern online broker, DEGIRO offers access via desktop, tablet and smartphone.

At DEGIRO, securities accounts can be accessed via desktop, tablet or smartphone. DEGIRO distinguishes between three variants:

From external to DEGIRO: free of charge

From DEGIRO to external: 20€ per position

Within DEGIRO: 7.50€ per position

Important: As a rule, the selling broker charges fees. To avoid surprises, you should clarify these costs with your previous provider in advance.

Is DEGIRO eligible for savings plans?

DEGIRO is definitely suitable for ETF savings plans in terms of amount: thanks to the low fixed fees of €1 or €3 per transaction, deposits are generally worthwhile from as little as CHF 500 per purchase.

However, there is a clear disadvantage in terms of convenience: there is no auto-invest. Each purchase must be triggered manually, which means additional effort, especially if you save regularly.

If a more convenient solution is important to you, take a look at our comprehensive savings plan comparison ETF savings plan Switzerland: 3 strong reasons for the autopilot strategy.

Conclusion on our DEGIRO experience in Switzerland

DEGIRO impresses above all with its very low and transparent fees. ETF trades cost €1 (core selection) or €3 – regardless of the investment amount. As a foreign provider, DEGIRO also does not charge any stamp duty and there are no ongoing custody account fees. This cost model has a particularly positive effect on larger amounts.

DEGIRO also scores points for simplicity of use: the platform is clearly structured and deliberately kept lean, without any functional ballast. Account opening and handling are purely digital and quick.

There are drawbacks depending on your needs: ETFs on US exchanges are not available and automated savings plans are not supported.

Overall, DEGIRO is a very attractive trading platform for many investors, especially when low fees and a lean setup are the main focus.

If you choose DEGIRO, you will receive the following via our partner link the first CHF 100 in transaction fees will be credited to your account.
